McFly have claimed that they are shocked by the increased Mail on Sunday sales generated by their new album.

The group gave away its Radio: ACTIVE LP with the newspaper for free, prompting a 300,000 rise in circulation.

Speaking at UNICEF’s Soccer Aid event, singer Danny Jones told DS: “It did 300,000 in one day!

“300,000 more than it normally sells. For us, that was just massive. If we sell 300,000 in a week, we’ve done really well. I’m really happy.”

He continued: “I don’t really care what anyone says, it was the right decision for us. We wanted to crossover our crowd and we had this amazing opportunity to get our album into millions of homes in one day and we took it.”

Jones added: “We just want people to enjoy the album and realise we’re not that band. In fact, we’re f***ing amazing.”

Soccer Aid airs on ITV on Sunday at 6pm. Jones will play for the England team alongside Jonathan Wilkes, Tom Felton, Craig David, Angus Deayton, Jamie Theakston and various ex-footballers.

Performing Lies

Following the phenomenal success of McFly’s album giveaway with The Mail on Sunday last month, the band release brand new song Lies as a single on September15.

A midtempo rocker with a sleazy funk bassline
and blasts of brass, Lies marks another step in the musical evolution of one of Britain’s most successful groups of the Noughties.

“Lyrically, Lies is definitely the darkest song we’ve ever written,” says Tom Fletcher, who shares vocals on the track with Danny Jones.

“It’s about a real bitch of a girl who is out for herself and doesn’t care who she uses to get what she wants. We did have a girl in mind when we wrote it, but really it’s an amalgam of several girls we have met along the way. We hope she burns in hell at the end. A real
good time tune then!”

The hip-shaking Lies is McFly’s funkiest, most ambitious song to date and one of four new tracks that appear on the deluxe edition of new album Radio:ACTIVE, out in September.

In July, a 10-track version of Radio:ACTIVE was given away in a groundbreaking promotion with The Mail On Sunday that saw McFLY become the first current chart act to follow in the footsteps of Prince’s revolutionary, free album release. In a single day, 2.4 million copies of Radio:ACTIVE arrived in homes throughout Britain.

The Mail On Sunday’s circulation jumped 300,000 above its average as fans flocked to hear the first McFly material since the band left their major label home to set up their own company, Super Records. On the day of its release, Radio:ACTIVE’s first single, One For The Radio, entered the charts at No.2.

As well as four new songs, the deluxe edition of Radio:ACTIVE includes a DVD and 32 page booklet. McFly embark on their biggest ever arena tour in November, taking in 12 dates from Cardiff to Glasgow and Liverpool to London.

Those 2012 Olympic party performers McFly have a new single coming out on September 15, and it’s called “Lies”.

The song’s pretty epic and I think it’s one of the boys’ best yet.

“Chart-busting band McFly will headline an event in Maidstone raising vital funds to support soldiers wounded while serving this country.

The top pop act, which has had seven number ones and two number one albums, will perform in the county town for the first time at the A Day for Heroes extravaganza next month.

The four-piece band, singer Tom Fletcher, guitarist Danny Jones, bassist Dougie Poynter and drummer Harry Judd, will be the star attraction at the fundraiser for the Help for Heroes charity at the County Showground in Detling Hill on Sunday September 21.

Other artists confirmed for the day are 80s legend Nik Kershaw, the Counterfeit Stones, Ultimate Earth Wind & Fire, and top Bob Marley tribute act Legend.

There will also be a special appearance by Jeff Silbar, co-writer of the ballad Wind Beneath My Wings, who will perform the poignant song with soul diva Jocelyn Brown.

Its chorus of “Did you ever know that you’re my hero?” has become an anthem for the charity supporting the brave servicemen and women of our Armed Forces.

More acts are expected to be added to the bill, but also confirmed to appear are the Minden Band, a 30-piece military band, a nine-piece pop band and an 18-piece swing band.

The event, which will run from midday to 10pm, will be compered by Maidstone-born actor Shaun Williamson and TV presenter Cheryl Baker, who is from Sevenoaks.

Kent’s own The Princess of Wales’s Royal Parachute Regiment will open the show will a spectacular entrance and there will be more than 20 free funfair rides to keep the crowds entertained between acts.

The rides will include a reverse bungee power shot, a waltzer, dodgems, carousel wave swinger chair ride, with five child rides and a lighthouse slide.

Military-based attractions lined up are a mock Harrier jump jet, a jet flight simulator, the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment parachute display team, and inflatable Army assault course.

An event spokeswoman said: “Celebrities, artists and the military are joining forces to give families a day out to remember, while raising essential funds for Help for Heroes.”

This charity was launched last October to help our wounded servicemen and women by Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson and his wife Francie.

Its celebrity supporters include footballer David Beckham, Princes William and Harry, England cricket captain Kevin Pietersen and rugby star Jonny Wilkinson.

Advance tickets will cost £25 for adults, £14 for children aged six to 12 and £5 for those aged under five. A family ticket for two adults and two children will only be available by advance booking for £70.
