Radio:Active Review

The Sunday Times posted a review of McFLY’s Radio:Active:
Watching a boyband grow up is never pretty - especially the kind of boyband that thinks it never was one. So, first of all, we have to hand it to McFly for handling the transition out of Island rather well. Their ploy of giving away a shortened version of Radio:Active with a newspaper, then releasing this longer version “traditionally”, is an eminently sensible way of saying to a big audience: “Hey, world! We’re not what you think we are! We can really rock!” Except, sadly, they are and they can’t. They can write superior power-pop, which - somebody at Island obviously realised - needed a fair amount of fairy dust sprinkled on it. Here, though, the songs are presented without fairy dust: overstretched, overwrought and (with the exception of the singles Lies and the aptly titled One for the Radio) rather samey.
